Gameboy advance game ratings
Metroid Fusion emerged as an essential experience on the Game Boy Advance, one that took protagonist Samus Aran in new directions along lines of tightly-focused linear storytelling and constantly challenging gameplay. Unlike other Metroid games, Aran's journey was fraught with more peril than usual thanks to her Power Suit being damaged and replaced with a deadly parasite.
Always outmatched but never outgunned, Metroid Fusion focused on enhancing its gameplay with atmospheric visuals and sounds, creating a deadly journey for the hero and a template from which future Metroid games would be inspired. Read our Metroid Fusion review. The original Metroid is a flawed classic, a pioneer in action from the 8-bit genre that was just begging for a proper remake.
What really made Metroid: Zero Mission one of the best remasters of its time though, was the love and care that was applied to its core mechanics and tweaks to create a smoother experience. Once you unlocked the original game as a slyly-hidden extra, those differences really stood out, and when combined with the new cinematics and extra gameplay content after the traditional battle with Mother Brain, Zero Mission stood tall as one of the best Metroid experiences on the Game Boy Advance.
Read our Metroid: Zero Mission review. Game Freak had raised the bar for sequels with its mammoth tour of the Johto region, and for Pokemon's third-generation debut on the Game Boy Advance, the developer had its work cut out for it. While Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire may not have as much real estate to explore as its predecessor, it was arguably a superior sequel that further polished every single aspect of a traditional Pokemon journey with a stunning new region, dozens of new critters to capture, and a presentation that looked like a million Poke-bucks.
With some of the best new Pokemon designs of its time, a wonderfully wet landscape to explore, and extra features such as stuffing your team full of delicious handcrafted candies, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire continued to raise the bar, while the Emerald edition of the game refined its ideas into a well-received greatest hits package. Read our Pokemon Ruby review.
In what would become a new tradition for the Pokemon franchise, the original games of the series were entirely remade and brought into the modern era of handheld gaming.
The main beats of the story--a trainer challenging eight gyms in order to prove their worth to the Elite Four and ultimately become a Pokemon master--had been retained, but these remakes also contained several features that had been introduced in Generation III. A new region in the form of the Sevi Islands was added, Team Rocket had a much larger role in the story, and numerous other tweaks under the hood made the classic Pokemon games feel like a rejuvenated experience.
The always-lovable Luigi was playable, the visuals were tweaked to look better on the handheld console, gameplay readability was a cut above the original game, and stages now had extra collectibles to search for in the form of Dragon Coins. It may not have added that much to the original game, but that's because there really wasn't much more that Nintendo could do to improve on an all-time classic.
More than two decades after it heel-flipped onto the Game Boy Advance, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is still a modern-day miracle that has held up brilliantly. Developer Vicarious Visions somehow managed to squeeze all the addictive attitude of Neversoft's sensational skateboarding game into an isometric package of sick flips, instrumental covers of the influential soundtrack, and impressive graphics that never skipped a beat. Some concessions were obvious, but at its core, this version of Birdman's adventures had all the charm and attitude it needed to skate with its bigger brothers on home consoles.
The third game about micro-games starring Wario, Mario's hilarious doppelganger was in his prime with this outing. A gyro sensor in the cartridge made each digestible micro-game that much more fun to play, providing the signature twisting excitement that the box art delivered. Immaculately presented with Wario's bizarre art design, the third time was the charm with this collection of quirky games.
In the s, Wario had finally stepped out of the shadow of Mario and begun forging an identity for himself as Nintendo's mascot for weird, wonderful, and wacky games. Wario Land 4 is no different, as between superb platforming segments there was a clever selection of bonuses that could be uncovered with a return to each stage. While it may have looked like a smaller game at first, Wario Land 4's modest stages were packed with extra detail, providing substance and style in each.
Read our Wario Land 4 review. It plays very much the same as every other Metal Slug game, bar the fact that this offering looks better and works on a plane or a train. Collect cards by shooting scenery and saving hostages.
There are to collect, each card unlocking new information, abilities, or slugs to enhance the game. WarioWare Twisted follows the same theme as the other games in the series. Each game lasts around 3 to 5 seconds, with players twisting and spinning their GBA to complete challenges.
The Twisted cartridge houses a gyro sensor that adds to the general feeling of madness. It helped to set this title apart from others in the canon and to garner tonnes of awards in the process! Next up on our list of the best Gameboy Advance games of all time is Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance! Harmony of Dissonance is the second vampire slaying title in the canon for the GBA. The Belmont Clan are back, as is Dracula.
These guys never seem to stop battling each other, though I suppose one party is trying to suck the blood from the other…. As with many of the early Castlevania titles, Harmony of Dissonance follows a 2D side-scrolling style of gameplay. Ghoulish and ghastly enemies are ten-a-penny in this game, along with all of the demonic backgrounds and scenery that make these titles so great.
The legendary whip makes a comeback, as do other projectiles such as holy water. The game might not be the best rated in the Castlevania series, but we love this portable monster-bashing title. Disney characters in an RPG game — it just works! Chain of Memories sits slap bang in-between the two major home console Kingdom Hearts releases. Expect building stats through collecting and battles like every great RPG ever made.
The difference being that Walt Disney has left a major mark on this one. Fire Emblem games require a tactical mind, and players must maintain a steady nerve if they want to beat some of the weird and wonderful enemies in this RPG title. We all went crazy when this title came out; we had a lot of lost time in the Fire Emblem world to catch up with! This title takes place in the country of Magvel, an area divided into five separate nation-states. It differs slightly from the previous Fire Emblem titles in the series but still revolves around turn-based battles on gridded battlefields and a plot that would make George R.
R Martin proud. With over , units sold throughout , this twin-riffic royal adventure was, and still is, a great success. With leaked news of the Metroid Prime 4 release date , it only seems right to introduce the gnarliest heroine in the galaxy, Samus Aran.
Metroid: Zero Mission is a remake of the very first Metroid game, boasting enhanced graphics and gameplay that really do the original story justice. The colours are fantastic, the levels are easier to see, and the whole thing feels like a new game in its own right. If you loved the original Metroid title and want to play it on the bus or in the park, then this is one of the best Gameboy Advance games for you. Far from being a direct copy, Metroid: Zero Mission has new mini-levels, bosses, and areas to explore too.
Set on Planet Zebes, a world where plasma doors and elevators seem to have been in large supply, Samus must fight Space Pirates and collect suit upgrades. In the Zero suit, Samus only has limited weapons and has to survive rather than obliterate everything in sight. First up on our list of the best Gameboy Advance games is a character that you should all have come across before. Spyro has to get to the bottom of the mystery, and although the controls have been classed as tricky by some gaming critics, I loved this adventure from start to finish.
Spyro is purple, my GBA was purple, and my thumbs went purple for a little while after playing this the first time due to lack of blood.
Rayman Advance is a port of the very first Rayman Adventure. This story takes our legless, armless-wonder through a series of 6 bright and colourful worlds in a mix of Castle of Illusion and Super Mario Bros style action. The next game in our list of the best Gameboy Advance games is a bit of a contraversial one…. I love Worms: World Party , and so did many other gamers out there.
I saw it as a natural progression to Worms: Armageddon and another chance to get stuck into some insane-invertebrate-action. Some critics thought that the game lacked any real backbone a little like its characters , and refused to accept it into the franchise.
Any game that has weapons such as bazookas, holy hand grenades, and a concrete donkey is alright in my book! You control an army of worms that have to blast the living daylights out of an opposing team of worms using high-powered weaponry. World Party is the last side-scrolling 2D adventure in the series and a real must have in my opinion. If beating Covid was as easy as destroying the nasty virus baddies in Dr Mario, then I reckon the Retro Dodo team could have become the saviours of the globe by now.
It was Tetris with a Mushroom Kingdom vibe, and it made me feel as though I could probably just go out and get a job as a doctor without any problems. By trapping a virus inside your column or at the end of a line, you can eradicate it from the screen and make the world a healthier place. Destroy all the virus icons, clear the level, and move onto the next stage. The GBA version has been improved with new graphics and looks a lot fresher.
It also comes with Puzzle leage, so you get 2 games for the price of 1. Up next is Drill Dozer , a game that all of you Mr Driller fans out there will undoubtedly go stir crazy over! This game never received a European release, but thanks to the magic of the internet, you can pick up a copy pretty easily on most second-hand websites. You play as Jill, the owner of the Drill Dozer.
This action-packed platformer is full of puzzles and collectibles that you need to uncover. Players take charge of their favourite teams and go up against an opposing team in a Quidditch match; basketball on acid, on brooms, in the air.
You had to have the mind of an army tactician to play this game. It was tough, and you really needed to consider every move carefully if you wanted to succeed. As with games such as Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy, the weapons and magic lists are just as exciting as the main game itself.
There are lots of powerups and new abilities to obtain as you progress, providing you make it further than the training session, that is. This game cartridge has a photometric light sensor in it that can pick up sunlight.
When your weapons run out of charge, you can step outside your actual door and charge them back up again using the actual suns rays. It was released in Japan back in after a year development span that almost saw it being released on the N64 as a 64DD game. E kit. Sound a bit like Earthbound?
The graphics, the music, and the gameplay are all superb, and they are the only three things that really matter when it comes to video games! Armed with nothing more than boots, pants, and fists, dude must be cold! From developer Game Freak comes a game where a woman named Jill is part of a drilling gang called the Red Dozers. Drill Dozer mixes action elements with environmental puzzles, forcing the player to use Jill's Drill Dozer with some thought.
With upgrades to the Dozer, intuitive gameplay, and a familiar but fresh story, there is a lot to enjoy here that might surprise players. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a prequel that does not get enough attention. Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island is the handheld port that is, in many ways, the definitive port, allowing everyone to experience the adorable adventure of Yoshi and Baby Mario on the go.
From the coloring book art style to the unique gameplay that led to Yoshi getting his own series of spin-off games , at first, Yoshi's Island appears to be childish, but the levels quickly get more difficult and can test any player's patience. In an era when the Metroid games embraced a first-person shooter style of gameplay, Metroid Fusion was the franchise's return to the 2D platformer style it started with.
In it, Samus traverses a massive map in a Metroidvania-styled adventure, gets upgrades, and defeats alien menaces. An evil witch has replaced Princess Peach's fair speech with explosives! Mario and Luigi must once again come to her rescue, but this time they employ the help of Bowser, their sworn enemy. Mario and Luigi must learn new moves and combine powers to fight off enemies and move closer to the witch's castle.

Immerse yourself in this bright, cartoonish, and humorous world, complete with hit music featured in previous Mario games. You may not be able to live like the legend, but now you can skate like him. She's battled baddies on nearly every Nintendo system, and now, Samus Aran returns to her roots. Metroid: Zero Mission relives the story that started it all--revealing for the first time full details of her meeting with the Metroids.
The plotline will be familiar to longtime fans of the Metroid series, but the challenges are new, the power-ups are plentiful, and the graphics and sound are supercharged. Plus, if you thought that the original Metroid had a surprise ending, wait until you get past the Mother Brain in Metroid: Zero Mission. A new twist provides a deeper adventure than ever before.
